The Republic of Belarus (1991 – present days)

 

независимость беларусиThe year of 1991 saw the proclamation of the first national state of the Belarusians – the Republic of Belarus. In December of the same year Viskuli (Belaya Vezha) hosted leaders of the Republic of Belarus, Russian Federation and Ukraine who signed the Act on the Denunciation of the Treaty to Create the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dated 1922. The USSR stopped its existence. The Republic of Belarus became an independent sovereign state. 

March 15, 1994 saw the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus adopt the new Constitution which declared Belarus a unitary democratic social law-governed state. On July, 1994 according to the Constitution, Alexander Lukashenko was elected as the first President.  

According to the referendum of 1996, the Republic adopted the new edition of the Constitution with supplements and amendments.

April 2, 1997 saw the signing of an Agreement to create the Union of the Republic of Belarus and Russian Federation. On December 8, 1999 the presidents of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus signed an Agreement on Creation of Union State.

On October 10, 2000 the leaders of member-states of the Customs Union signed an Agreement to Establish the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC). Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan enter therein. The above organization was established in order to activate the process to form the Customs union and common economic space.
