The Brest Free Economic Zone set up in March, 1996 is presently one of the most attractive investment grounds of the Republic of Belarus. It occupies the surface area of 71 sq. km and comprises of two areas. The first one is located north-westward from Brest linking the state frontier of the Republic and near border checkpoint “Kukuryki - Kozlovichi”. It is developing due to construction of a customs terminal, storage complexes and creation of service maintenance objects. The second district is located eastward from the administrative centre, near operating airport and motorway Berlin-Warsaw-Minsk-Moscow. Currently, there are 75 residents from 20 countries registered in FEZ “Brest”.

 

Nowadays, FEZ “Brest” residing companies process fish, wood, manufacture furniture, medium density fiberboards, confectionery products, meat products, fluorescent fixtures, paints and varnishes, traffic sign machines, apparel, chilling equipment, electrical products, thermostable glass plate, plastics articles, shrink polyethylene film and other products.

 

Registered in the free economic zone in 1998, JV “Santa Bremor” LLC is the largest residing company of FEZ “Brest”. The company manufactures fish preserves, ice cream, and canned seafood. JV “Santa Bremor” LLC has already obtained 99.5 mln. USD as investments. Belarus gained the reputation of being “sea state” due to “Santa Bremor”’s export of fish products to Germany, Canada, the USA, Russia and other countries.

 

It is worth mentioning that world extraction of capelin caviar amounts to 6 thous. tons/year, with Japan purchasing 3.5 thous. tons. The rest 2.5 tons are processed by the Brest “Santa Bremor”.

 

The products of such FEZ “Brest” residing companies as “STiM” UPE (construction engineering and supplies), foreign enterprise "Inco-food" (meat products), “First Chocolate Company” JV LLC and a number of other products are widely known on the CIS markets.

 

The priority trends to develop the FEZ are currently presented by establishing of enterprises conducting activities in the field of high technologies, pharmaceutical, automotive, electronic and engineering branches of industry. The most prospective ones are considered to be attraction of investments to set export and import-substituting productions.
